This is a large and long-lived tree with nearly black, deeply furrowed bark. Needles are 3-5" long. It has pineapple shaped pinecones. It is best adapted to grow in rocky areas.

Site Requirements: Grows well in hot, dry sites. Will grow in a variety of soils, but does best in those that are sandy and coarse textured. It has low alkalinity tolerance and is shade intolerant.
